The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs would have led to an even more pronounced decline in the population in the second half of the 20th century, if not two villages in the area (Calderuela and Cortos) in the 1970s. would have been incorporated.
economy
The basis of the life and survival of the self-sufficient inhabitants of the six villages of today's municipality for centuries was and is agriculture, which also includes cattle breeding to a small extent. Tourism plays almost no role.
history
In Roman times, the then probably non-existent place was on the road connecting Saragossa ( Caesaraugusta ) and Burgo de Osma ( Uxama Argaela ) or Astorga ( Asturica Augusta ). Visigoths and Moors left no traces on the municipality's territory. The 11th century is characterized by the Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) and resettlement ( repoblación ) the area that later equally from the Kingdom Aragon and Castile was claimed. In the 19th century Nieva , La Omeñaca and Tozalmoro were incorporated; Calderuela and Cortos followed in 1972 .
Attractions
Arancón
- Two Roman milestones ( milliarien ) are now set up in a public garden near the church. They were used in the Middle Ages to build the foundations of a bridge that has since been renewed.
- The Romanesque parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción from the 13th century is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and was completely redesigned in the 18th century. The baptismal font (pila bautismal) of the previous building is located in the baroque interior of the church .
- The La rana ("The Frog") spring, which was already used in the Middle Ages, has a modern setting.
Tozalmoro
- The apse of the Romanesque church of San Juan Bautista , made of precisely hewn stones, is structured on the outside by three-quarter columns and ends below the eaves in a figural console frieze with a rolling frieze of scrolls . The unadorned and portal-free west side is dominated by a bell gable (espadaña) . The real showpiece of the church is the south portal protruding slightly from the wall, the tympanum of which shows a very 'primitively' designed Mother of God of the Sedes sapientiae type in a mandorla accompanied by four angels ; to the left and right of it there are two more figures. The capital decoration shows figures in a similar style. The front of the inner archivolt , designed as an irregular braided band , which is framed by a diamond rod on the outside, is also interesting .
Omeñaca
- The single-Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is the Conception of Mary consecrated and impresses with its mighty crossing tower and its porch ( portico ) on the south side. Its double columns show predominantly vegetable designed capitals, but some 'primitive' figures can also be seen.
Cortos
- The Iglesia San Esteban was built in the 16./17. Built in the 19th century from rubble stones; only the corner stones are precisely carved. It surprises with its size. All windows and also two sound openings of the transverse rectangular bell tower were later bricked up for structural reasons. The tower closes with four corner balusters .
- At the Ermita de la Soledad from the 16./17. In the 19th century it seems to have been a former church or cemetery chapel , because there are several stone crosses in a field nearby.
