Yanguas is a mountain village and a municipality ( municipio ) with 113 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Spanish province of Soria in the autonomous region of Castile-León, right on the border with the neighboring region of La Rioja . The place has been recognized as a Conjunto histórico since 1993 .

location

The place Yanguas is located on the Río Cidacos , a tributary of the Ebro , a good 51 km north of the provincial capital Soria at an altitude of about 960 to 985  m . The climate in winter is cool, but in summer it is quite warm; the low precipitation (approx. 620 mm / year) falls - with the exception of the rather poorly rainy summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Population development

Residents 758 656 457 136 104

The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs. Several hamlets (Vellosillo, La Mata, La Vega, Lería) were completely abandoned during the 19th and 20th centuries.

economy

The place was and is the economic center of a rural community in which mainly cattle was raised. Today tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) plays an important role in the town's income.

history

The place did not exist in the Celtic-Roman times, but the upper Ebro Valley was used by transhumants as pasture. The region had been in the hands of the Moors since the 8th century . After the region was recaptured by the Christians ( reconquista ) around the middle of the 11th century, Yanguas was repopulated ( repoblación ) in the 12th century . The first documents that mention the place date from the 13th century. During this time, the residents were exempt from various duties such as military service, road tolls, etc.

On May 27, 1375, the wedding between Charles Infanta of Navarre (later King Charles III) and Eleonora Infanta of Castile, daughter of King Henry II of Castile, took place in the district of Leria . Decisive for the choice of Lerias was probably the border location of the place: Leria is in Castilian territory, Navarra is only two kilometers (as the crow flies) away. The 16th century is considered to be the heyday of the region, which then had around 5,000 inhabitants.

Attractions

Castillo
  • The buildings of the place are built almost uniformly from rubble stones.
  • The Castillo de Yanguas was indeed built in the 14th or 15th century, but the construction of corresponding rammed earth mixed with small stones, all the Berber traditions of the Maghreb . The mostly wooden or half-timbered buildings inside have disappeared, but several (re-used?) Columns testify to the overall representative character of the castle.
  • The late Gothic Iglesia de San Lorenzo still has a Romanesque baptismal font inside .
  • The Iglesia de Santa María dates from the 16th century; however, it was modernized in the 18th century. The nave contains several carved altars in different styles.
  • The Torre de San Miguel is the only remnant of an otherwise disappeared Romanesque church from the 12th century.
  • A museum for sacred art (Museo de Arte Sacro) was set up in the old rectory .
