location
The place Castillejo de Robledo is located in a valley basin at an altitude of about 960 m , about 27 km (driving distance) southeast of Aranda de Duero ; the neighboring municipality of Peñaranda de Duero, which is worth seeing , is just under 30 km north. The small towns of San Esteban de Gormaz , Burgo de Osma and Berlanga de Duero are further east; the provincial capital Soria is about 100 km northeast. The climate is harsh in winter, but temperate to warm in summer; Rain (approx. 495 mm / year) falls over the year.

As a result of increasing drought and the mechanization of agriculture and the resulting lower demand for labor, the number of inhabitants has declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century; there is also the abandonment of numerous small farms.
economy
As a result of the altitude, the agricultural yields, which were primarily used for self-sufficiency , are low. That is why livestock and dairy farming have always played an important role. The place is now part of the Ribera del Duero wine region . In the last few decades, income from tourism has increased significantly in importance.
history
Not much is known about the history of the small town. During the Islamic period , the area was depopulated and was not repopulated ( repoblación ) until the 11th and 12th centuries by immigrants from the Christian north, but also by Christians from southern Spain (" Mozarabers " ) . In 1311 there was a settlement of the Knights Templar here , to which the foundation and / or the further development of the place can possibly go back.
Attractions
- A ruined castle, which formerly belonged to a fortress of the Knights Templar , which was dissolved in 1312 at the Council of Vienne by Pope Clement V under pressure from the French King Philip IV , dominates the small town. The castle was then handed over to the Order of St. John , who, however, hardly cared about it, so that at some point it fell into disrepair.
- The single-aisled Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción with its bell gable ( espadaña ) over the portal-free and windowless west side probably dates from the first half of the 12th century. The apse is divided into three parts by two services ; two cornices - the lower one cranked around the services - ensure a horizontal structure. The almost completely walled up windows are framed by small inserted columns with capitals and spanned by profiled arches, which are preceded by an outer arch with a jagged frieze. A console frieze , some of which is figurative, runs under the eaves . The church's greatest treasure, however , is the multi-tiered High Romanesque portal protected by a south porch ( portico or galería porticada ), the geometric decoration of which (including a diamond rod ) with a dominant, almost three-dimensional multi - pass arch is very varied. The nave is covered by an open roof truss ; only the apse and the fore choir are vaulted and decorated in a later period (15th century?) with a monochrome blue tile mosaic that seems to imitate a sky. The front of the triumphal arch is designed as a double-headed green snake.
- Surroundings
- The small hermit church Ermita de los Mártires has a flat end of the choir and is surmounted in the west by an oversized three-arched bell gable. The remains of medieval frescoes were uncovered inside the church.
