In the first half of the 20th century the number of inhabitants was between 600 and 800. The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs have contributed to a large extent to the significant population decline of the last decades.
economy
For centuries the place served as an important trade, craft and service center for the rural villages and farmsteads in the area. It was also an important station in the system of trade and livestock routes ( Cabaña Real de Carreteros ) in northern Spain. Today wood processing companies and tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) play a not insignificant role for the town's income.
history
After the Arab-Moorish conquest , large areas in the north of the Iberian Peninsula were depopulated , which were established in the beginning of the 10th century under the Castilian Count Gonzalo Téllez and then in the second half of the 11th century under Alfonso VI. were recaptured ( reconquista ) and repopulated ( repoblación ). In the Middle Ages, the place was on the northern part of the Way of St. James ( Camino de Santiago ), which led from Catalonia ( Barcelona ) via Aragón ( Saragossa ) to Castile ( Burgos ) and connected there with the main route ( Camino Francés ). From the 16th to the 18th century, Cabrejas was the capital of the Communidad de Villa y Tierra .
Attractions
- The castle ( castillo ) originally dates from the Moorish times; After the reconquest, it was taken over by the Christians and expanded until it lost strategic importance and fell into disrepair in the late Middle Ages. The most important architectural remains are the keep ( torre de homenaje ) and parts of the surrounding wall ring with a ruinous gate.
- A round tower interpreted as a watchtower ( atalaya ) from Islamic times is very close.
- The parish church ( Iglesia de San Millán ), a rather unadorned and clunky-looking building from the 16th / 17th centuries. Century has a remarkable baroque portal with side rotated columns . The interior houses an imposing altarpiece in the Churrigueresque style .
- In the center of the village there is a court column ( rollo or picota ) from the time when Cabrejas del Pinar was the main town of the Communidad de Villa y Tierra .
- A restored claw stand ( potro de herrar ) is on the outskirts.
- The imposing single-nave, but with a transept, Ermita de la Blanca is located near the main road N234. It is a foundation established by three families who emigrated to Mexico in the 18th century and who had become prosperous there. The church was consecrated in 1814; the portal shows clear classical styles.
- The mostly unadorned Ermita de Santa Ana , built mostly from field stones ( mampostería ), stands at the entrance to the village and is now used as a cemetery chapel.
