The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs led to a noticeable population decline ( rural exodus ) in the second half of the 20th century .

economy

For centuries the community lived exclusively from growing grain ( barley and wheat ), which was mainly operated for self-sufficiency ; livestock farming ( sheep , goats , chickens ) also took place to a small extent. Today agriculture still plays the most important role, but there has also been a small amount of income from tourism (rental of holiday homes).

history

After the Arab-Moorish conquest , large areas in the north of the Iberian Peninsula were depopulated . In the 10th century began under the Castilian Count Gonzalo Téllez in the first half of the 12th century under I. Alfonso of Aragon completed recapture ( reconquista ) of Old Castile . During this time, Ciria was repopulated ( repoblación ) by settlers from the Christian north . In the 14th century the place suffered from the Castilian-Aragonese " War of the Two Peter ". The local castle served to secure the once contested border with the Kingdom of Aragón - a situation that became obsolete when Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragón got married in 1469.

Attractions

Portal of the Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor
  • The three-aisled hall church (Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor), which was built from rubble stones with the exception of the buttresses and the corner stones , comes from the transitional style between late Gothic and Renaissance ; on the north side it is surmounted by an imposing baroque bell tower, which is entirely made of precisely hewn stone material. As is customary in the region, the church building, which can only be entered via the Renaissance portal on the south side, has a star vault and houses a portrait of the Virgin Mary of the Virgen de la Serna, venerated as a miracle worker by the population .
Surroundings
  • Remains of a Celtiberian fortress ( castrum ) have been discovered on the territory of the municipality.
  • The poorly preserved Ermita de la Virgen de la Serna is about 1 km outside the village.
  • A castle (castillo) probably already stood on the site in Moorish times, but its current appearance comes exclusively from the renovations in the early 15th century when the place and its castle were owned by the Constable of Castile Álvaro de Luna . The castle ruins are located on a rock about 500 m north of the village; its irregular floor plan, which was unusual for the late construction period, is based on the natural features of the site.
