Yelo is a small mountain village and capital of a municipality with only 40 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the south of the Spanish province of Soria in the autonomous community of Castile-León . The place belongs to the diocese of Burgo de Osma .

location

Yelo is located on the Río Bordecorex in the barren mountain landscape in the south of the province of Soria at an altitude of approx. 1125 m above sea level. d. M. The distance to the nearest town, Medinaceli , is just under 12 km (driving distance) in a south-easterly direction; the provincial capital Soria is a good 75 km north. The climate in winter is cool, but in summer it is quite warm; the low precipitation (approx. 520 mm / year) falls - with the exception of the rather poorly rainy summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Population development

Residents 436 374 63 44

The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

With the exception of barley , hardly any grain was possible to grow on the barren soils of the cold plateaus of the Soria province . For centuries, the population of Yelo lived mainly from raising sheep and goats, whose milk was used to make cheese, which could be sold at the market in Medinaceli or exchanged for flour, vegetables, etc. The wool of the sheep was spun and in winter it was woven into lengths of fabric from which simple clothing was made. Goat hair was only suitable for making weatherproof throws ( ponchos ) or sacks, ropes, etc.

Attractions

  • Almost all houses in the village are made of field stones and largely unplastered.
  • The local church ( Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción ), also made of field stones ( granite, etc.) is a single-nave, Romanesque building with an entrance on the south side. Inside there is a baroque altarpiece .
  • The main attraction of the place, however, are its five pigeon houses ( palomares ) standing in a row , which used to make a significant contribution to supplying the local population with poultry meat.
  • A stone stele is located on a circular, stepped base in the center of the village.
