Baraona , formerly Barahona , is a municipality in the province of Soria in the east of the autonomous community of Castile-Leon in Spain . The place is a good 60 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Soria .

Baraona is one of the southernmost communities in the province of Soria , it is located in the northwest of Soria's southernmost comarca (district) Arcos de Jalón , which is also known as Tierra de Medinaceli. However, Almazán in the north in the comarca of the same name serves as the regional supply center . In addition to Baraona itself, the districts of Jodra de Cardos, Pinilla del Olmo and Romanillos de Medinaceli have belonged to the municipality since a regional reform in 1970.

The population was around 700 at the beginning of the 20th century, but due to continued rural exodus, especially in the 1940s, only fewer than 200 people now live here.

Agriculture determines the economy, especially dry farming and sheep farming. There was also some construction industry.

history

Baraona Church

The Aeródromo located here was of supraregional importance in the history of Baraona during the civil war.

Campo de Aviación de Baraona

Baraona was a field airfield during the Spanish Civil War . The area was from the beginning in the territory controlled by the coup plotters and there were subsequent reprisals against the population and executions of male residents of Baraona.

The notorious German Condor Legion also used the airfield, including for bombing attacks on Sigüenza and the Guadalajara area . Parts of the German fighter squadron used the site for the first time in October 1936, before the actual Condor Legion was set up.

Air traffic control systems have been installed on the former airfield since the 1950s . Today there is still a “VOR” radio beacon in the neighboring municipality of Villasayas , the northernmost for approaches to Madrid-Barajas airport .
