The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs contributed to a large extent to the significant decline in the population in the second half of the 20th century.

economy

For centuries the community lived exclusively from growing grain ( barley and wheat ), which was mainly operated for self-sufficiency ; livestock farming ( sheep , goats , chickens ) also took place to a small extent. The place Almaluez served as a mercantile, craft and cultural center for the villages, hamlets and farmsteads in its area. Today agriculture still plays the most important role, but there is also marginal income from tourism (rental of holiday homes).

history

Very little is known about the history of the community. After the Arab-Moorish conquest , large areas in the north of the Iberian Peninsula were depopulated . In the 10th century began under the Castilian Count Gonzalo Téllez in the second half of the 11th century under Alfonso VI. Complete reconquest ( reconquista ) of Old Castile . During this time the area was repopulated ( repoblación ) by settlers from the Christian north . In 1597 parts of what is now the municipality came into the possession of the Hurtado de Mendoza family; this began a brief economic and cultural boom.

Attractions

Almaluez
  • The only attraction of the place is the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena from the 16th century.
Chercoles
  • The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Rueda shows clear echoes of the late Gothic .
Puebla de Eca
  • The castle ruins in the hamlet of Puebla de Eca may still date from the Moors.
  • The church was built in the 16th century; the massive bell tower seems to be older.
  • The court column (rollo or picota) accompanied by four services was erected around 1600.
