Dévanos (also Debanos ) is a place and at the same time the center of a municipality ( municipio ) with only 79 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Spanish province of Soria in the autonomous community of Castile-León . The parish belongs to the Diocese of Osma-Soria .

location

The town and municipality of Dévanos are located on the Río Añamaza , a tributary of the Ebro , in the barren mountain landscape in the extreme northeast of the Soria province near the border with the La Rioja region at an altitude of approx. 940  m . The provincial capital Soria is about 64 km (driving distance) to the southwest; the lovely small town of Ágreda is just under 8 km southeast. The climate is harsh, sometimes temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 565 mm / year) falls over the year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the increasing aridity of the mountain region led to a loss of jobs in the second half of the 20th century, which in turn triggered a rural exodus.

economy

Dévanos is a bit off the former road between Soria and Pamplona , which is still used today . In addition to the usual self-supply economy, goods and ideas came to the place where traders, craftsmen and service providers settled.

history

Celtiberian traces can be found along the Río Añamaza . The Romans and Visigoths , on the other hand, left no archaeologically usable traces; however, the name of the place was Latinized in Tabanium . The region was recaptured from the hands of the Moors by King Alfonso I of Aragon at the beginning of the 11th century ( reconquista ) ; at Dévanos there was even a medieval castle (castillo) . From the 11th to the 13th centuries, Christians from the north but also from the south ( Mozarabians ) of the Iberian Peninsula populated the area.

Attractions

  • The Iglesia de la Virgen , built in the 16th century from broken stone and bricks, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary . The entrance porch on the south side of the church, which is overlaid by a bell gable (espadaña) and which has a remarkable baroque carved altar inside, is pretty.
  • The Palacio de los Condes de Villarrea shows a beautiful portal with a curved keel arch . The portal and the window above are each framed by an Alfiz .
Surroundings
  • The Ermita de la Virgen del Castillejo was built in 1922 just outside the village in neo-Gothic style.
  • The Fabrica de Luz , built at the beginning of the 20th century, was a hydroelectric power station on the Río Añamaza.
