Menhir of planches

The Menhir des Planches is located in Vaubaine, east of the Orival quarry and south of the Château des Planches, west of Amblie on the right bank of the Seulles , in the Calvados department in Normandy in France .

Small bowl on the top

The hexagonal, columnar menhir is 1.35 meters high. There are traces of its wedging on the base. A bowl about five centimeters deep ( French cupules ) and parallel channels can be seen on the stone. Smaller bowls lie on top and on the sides of the stone.

In 1913, Raoul Doranlo, a member of the French Prehistoric Society, carried out an ancient stone census in the region north of Caen. He reported some remarkable stones around Amblie. He pointed out that menhirs are often small and many of them have been smashed, buried, or removed from fields. Some were sold by the farmers.

Seven other menhirs are less than eight kilometers away: Menhir des Demoiselles from Colombiers-sur-Seulles , La Pierre Levée du Clos St Gilles in Creully , Menhir de la Pierre Debout from Reviers , Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville from Bény-sur -Mer , Les Grosses Devises from Colomby-sur-Thaon and the Pierre Tourneresse from Cairon.
