Creully Castle

Creully is a village and a former French commune with 1,597 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Bayeux and the canton of Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse .

With effect from January 1, 2017, the previous municipalities of Creully , Saint-Gabriel-Brécy and Villiers-le-Sec were merged into a Commune nouvelle called Creully sur Seulles and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Creully.

geography

Creully is located in the valley of the Seulles , about 12 km east-northeast of Bayeux and 18 km northwest of Caen .

The municipality was surrounded by Crépon in the north, Tierceville in the northeast, Amblie in the east, Lantheuil in the southeast, Cully in the south, Saint-Gabriel-Brécy in the southwest, Le Manoir in the west and Villiers-le-Sec in the northwest.

history

The name of the place goes back to the Anglo-Saxon term churl , which means 'farmer'.

In the course of the Normandy invasion , the British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery set up his headquarters in Creully Castle for two weeks from June 8, 1944 . On June 12, 1944, King George V visited him there together with Prime Minister Churchill ; General Charles de Gaulle met Montgomery here on June 14, 1944. In their reports of the King's visit, the British press described the location of the castle in such detail that the German Air Force was able to bomb Montgomery into its headquarters To relocate Blay at Bayeux.
