In the first half of the 20th century, the community usually had well over 200 inhabitants. The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs have contributed to a large extent to the significant population decline in recent decades.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, the largely self-sufficient residents of the place lived mainly from growing grain; livestock farming ( sheep , goats , chickens ) also took place to a small extent. Today agriculture (growing barley and wheat ) still plays the most important role in the economic life of the small community. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments.

history

Celts and Visigoths left no archaeologically usable traces on the area of the municipality; A votive altar about 22 cm high comes from late Roman times and was found about a kilometer north of the village. After the Arab-Moorish conquest , large areas in the north of the Iberian Peninsula were depopulated . In the 10th century began under the Castilian Count Gonzalo Téllez in the second half of the 11th century under Alfonso VI. Complete reconquest ( reconquista ), which culminated in the capture of the city of Toledo, about 250 kilometers to the southwest (1085). During this time, Aldealseñor was repopulated ( repoblación ) by settlers from the north . A castle was probably built as early as the 10th century; the keep ( torre de homenaje ) visible today is likely to date from the 13th or 14th century. The place is mentioned for the first time in 1270; 38 families are registered in a tax register from 1528 - taking into account the fact that there were also non-taxable, i.e. unregistered families, a population of around 400 people can be derived.

Attractions

  • A fortress ( kasbah ) may have existed on the site as early as Islamic times, but nothing has survived , as has a first Christian castle. The 26 meter high keep, which originally served as a residential tower, is the oldest part and thus the forerunner of a representative palace of the Morales and Salcedo families from the 15th / 16th centuries that was added later. Century. The upper floor of the inclined right wing is designed as a loggia . The stone heraldic shield above the otherwise unadorned main entrance was not attached until the 18th century. The building has been recognized as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) since 1949 ; it now serves as a hotel.
  • The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Blanca is a building made of rubble in the transition style from the Romanesque to the Gothic . The original apse and triumphal arch are still preserved, whereas the actual church was rebuilt at a later time. In the south wall of the nave , some figuratively or decoratively worked stones from a previous building are inserted as spolia ; the portal is - as usual in the region - also here. The vault of the nave is from the 16th century; a richly decorated Romanesque font can also be seen.
  • Several houses in the village show crosses and short inscriptions etc. in the lintels or in the facades.
  • On the outskirts there is a beautifully restored wash house ( lavadero ) from the late 19th or early 20th century.
