Iberian mountains

The maximum 2315  m high Sierra de Moncayo is the highest section of the Iberian Mountains (Spanish Sistema Ibérico ) and thus one of the highest peaks in the Spanish interior. The mountain section, which covers a total area of approx. 11,000 hectares, has been designated as a nature park (Parque Natural del Moncayo) since 1978 . The whole area of the Sierra de Moncayo belongs to the sparsely populated Serranía Celtibérica .

geography

The Sierra de Moncayo, part of the Old Castilian chain of the Iberian Mountains, forms the border between the provinces of Soria in Old Castile and Saragossa in Aragon and is also part of the main watershed of the Iberian Peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean .

With a width of approx. 3 to 7 km, the Sierra de Moncayo extends over a total length of only about 15 km in a north-west-south-east direction. The area is forested in the lower lying areas. The crests of the three most important peaks ( Moncayo 2315 m, Lobera 2226 m, Peña Negra 2118 m), however, are covered with stone rubble (other peaks are: San Juan 2283 m, Morca 2273 m and Peña Negrilla 2171 m).

Numerous streams have their origin on the northeast side of the Sierra de Moncayo, which is often snow-covered in winter - many of them later form the Río Huecha , a tributary of the Ebro . The waters of the rivers Río Manubles and Río Isuela , which have their source on the western side of the mountains in the municipal areas of Borobia and Beratón ( Soria ), also flow over the Río Jalón and the Río Aranda, also the Ebro.

Ascent

Since the over 1000 m high highlands of the province of Soria adjoin to the west, the view from the north-east side, which is only about 500 to 800 m high, is much more impressive; of Alcalá de Moncayo , Añon de Moncayo , San Martín de la Virgen de Moncayo also start most mountain tours.
