Río Jalón in Terrer

The Río Jalón is an approximately 224 km long southwest tributary of the Ebro . It flows through parts of the autonomous regions of Castile-León and Aragon in northeastern Spain .

course

The Río Jalón rises in the Sierra Ministra at the interface of the Iberian Rim Mountains and the Iberian Divide Mountains near the southern border of the Soria province . From there it flows in a predominantly northeastern direction through the southeast of the Soria province. Then he reaches the Aragonese province of Saragossa ; there he picks up the waters of the Manubles River from the north at Ateca . Later it flows through the city of Calatayud and takes on the tributaries Río Piedra , Jiloca , Perejiles and Ribota. It meanders strongly and irrigates the farmland on its banks via canals. It finally flows into the Ebro near the city of Alagón about 20 km northwest of Saragossa .

history

In Roman times, part of the connecting road from Emerita Augusta ( Mérida ) via Augusta Bilbilis ( Calatayud ) to Caesaraugusta ( Saragossa ) ran along the river . In the 8th century the area was overrun by Arab-Moorish armies, which made Saragossa the provincial capital of the emirate (later caliphate) of Córdoba . During its collapse, the provincial governors made themselves independent and founded the Taifa Kingdom of Zaragoza (1018–1110). A few years later (1118) the Moors were pushed south by Alfonso I of Aragón ( reconquista ) . In the " War of the Two Peter ", the Castilians advanced along the Río Jalón to the east and conquered and destroyed several Aragonese castles.

Attractions

The Río Jalón flows through an old cultural landscape in northeastern Spain. Cities like Medinaceli , Arcos de Jalón , Calatayud and others bear witness to the region's long history. Along the river there are numerous castle ruins (castillos) as well as several churches (iglesias) and bell towers (campanares) in the Mudéjar style (e.g. Ateca , Calatayud, Ricla ).
