In the first half of the 20th century, the population of the place was always well over 2,000 people. Due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has steadily declined since then.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the place lived directly (as farmers or day laborers) or indirectly (as traders or craftsmen) from agriculture. They worked the lands of the landlord , the Marqués de Villaverde , who also had the title of Count Conde de Morata , and their own small fields. Crafts, trade and smaller service companies developed in the small town. A cement factory was built around the middle of the 20th century.

history

In the Middle Ages, the place was protected by a castle on a nearby rocky plateau. In the 17th century, the then Counts of Argillo moved their palace to the gradually developing city in the plain and shortly afterwards called themselves Condes de Morata .

Attractions

  • The Count's Palace is an outwardly unspectacular two-storey brick building from the years 1672–1676 with an extraordinary baroque console frieze under the eaves . The portal and frieze are made of sandstone blocks. Inside, an imposing stairwell and the painted ceiling of the elongated Salón pintado are surprising . The palace has been recognized as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) since 1983 .
  • The parish church ( Iglesia de Santa Ana ), also made of bricks, was built around the same time. The tower, which is square in the lower area and octagonal in its upper half, is striking. Inside there is a life dedicated to St. Anna devoted altarpiece .
  • A single arch bridge with a span of 20 meters ( Puente de Capurnos ) spans the Río Jalón and connects the two neighboring towns of Morata and Chodes .
  • The baroque Ermita de Santa Bárbara is located on a rocky hill above the city on the site of the old town; from here there is a beautiful view.
