Cariñena is a Spanish municipality (municipio) in the province of Zaragoza in the autonomous community of Aragon . It is the capital of the Comarca Campo de Cariñena and thus the center of a world-famous wine - growing region .

Viticulture

Cariñena is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Spain and has an excellent reputation. In 1932 the area was designated in 1960 and received the predicate Designation of Origin . This is also where the most important grape variety in northern Spain , the Cariñena (in Rioja and Navarra Mazuelo ), was produced, which, in contrast to Garnacha and Tempranillo, only plays a subordinate role in the Cariñena cultivation area .

Centro de Interpretación del Ferrocarril de la Comarca Campo de Cariñena

With the Centro de Interpretación del Ferrocarril de la Comarca Campo de Cariñena , the municipality has a railway museum that commemorates the construction of the 46-kilometer Ferrocarril de Cariñena a Zaragoza between Cariñena and Zaragoza by the engineer Juan Font Iglesias from 1882. The line was opened in 1887. The museum is housed in the former freight hall of the train station.
