Harriersand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The river island Harriersand is located in the Lower Weser between Bremen and Bremerhaven across from the Lower Saxony port city of Brake (Unterweser) . With a length of around eleven kilometers and an area of around six square kilometers, it is one of the longest river islands in Europe.

Because of its better accessibility from the east bank of the Weser, the island has been part of the Lower Saxony municipality of Schwanewede in the Osterholz district since 1974 . Before it belonged to Brake (today's district town of the Wesermarsch district ). 68 residents were registered in mid-2018.

The name Harriersand comes from the time of the first settlement around 1799, as evidenced in the Grand Ducal ( Oldenburg ) fire register, and refers to Brake-Harrien on the left-hand side of the West. Harriersand originally consisted of the seven different islands: Großer Pater, Harriersand, Kleiner Pater, Nonneneck, Oster-Pater, Wester-Pater and Wilhelms Plate. On the occasion of a Weser correction and deepening from 1924 to 1932, these were combined to form an island. Since then, the western branch of the Weser has formed the actual Weser, which in the area of the Lower Weser as far as Bremen has been expanded into a shipping route.

The eastern branch of the Weser, on the other hand, is much narrower and hardly carries any water at low tide . There is a tendency towards silting up here. This area is protected as a nature reserve on the right tributary of the Weser .

The island consists mainly of grassland and is used for agriculture. Tourism and local recreation play a further role ; there is a sandy beach for swimming in the Weser and a large children's playground. Harriersand is also used by those seeking relaxation, especially summer guests, for bike tours and hikes across the island and along the Weser beach (with a view of the port facilities at Brake). There are several holiday apartments, farm holidays and a campsite (exclusively for camping) available for overnight stays. There are also around 150 weekend houses on the island.

Harriersand can be reached from Rade via a road bridge crossing the right, eastern branch of the Weser. From there the Inselstraße leads in a northerly direction past the Strandhalle restaurant with the sandy beach and the campsite to a homestead on Wilhelmsplate in the north of the island. At the level of the restaurant there is a ferry connection for pedestrians and cyclists with the Guntsiet ferry across the Weser to Brake.

At the tip of the island in the north, where the narrow eastern branch of the Weser joins the much wider western branch, the actual Weser, there is a small mudflat area that can only be reached on foot when the tide is low.
