history
The place name was first mentioned in 1273. However, excavation finds with an urn cemetery and six barrows show that the local area was already settled in the Bronze Age.
Eggestedt is a very old farming village. A total of 15 full farms previously shaped the life of the village. The number of farms has meanwhile been reduced to two farms. Despite this small community, there was a winter school in Eggestedt as early as 1750, which was later also attended by Brundorf children.
In 1892 the place received a new school building. The Eggestedter School was always at risk due to the low number of children. During the Second World War, the teacher and his eight school children had to move to Schwanewede.
Eggestedt is located in a very interesting geological area, a so-called Ice Age Oos . These are alluvial sand that has accumulated in the meltwater channels below a glacier. With these sand and gravel deposits, Eggestedt is - as one chronicler noted - both blessed and punished. Only a few small towns had and still have such a well-developed road network.
On March 1, 1974 Eggestedt was incorporated into the municipality of Schwanewede .
Eggestedt had 186 inhabitants on June 30, 2007. As of June 30, 2012 there were 183 inhabitants. A site shooting range from the Schwanewede site and an ammunition depot were located here.
