historical overview

Tools from Neolithic settlers were found in the Schwaneweder district and some barrows from the Bronze Age (around 1800 BC) have been preserved in the municipality. The barrows in the Neegenbargsheide are north of Schwanewede. The name Schwanewede was first mentioned as a personal name in 1203. The first mentions of Aschwarden (1105) and Rade (1100) date back further. Later Hinnebeck 1236, Beckedorf 1260, Eggestedt 1273 and Brundorf were first mentioned in the 14th century. The place Schwanewede belonged to the Blumenthal office for a long time and together with it came in 1932 to the Osterholz district . In 1929 the villages of Schukamp and Lehmhorst were incorporated into Schwanewede.

In the course of the troop reduction, these associations were disbanded.

Until 2006, parts of the Medical Regiment 12 were stationed in Schwanewede after the relocation and disbandment of the other troops. From 2007, parts of the Rapid Emergency Medical Service Command (Kdo SES) were based in the Lützow barracks . In addition to the three command units, the supply support company and the medical training company, the staff of the Follow-On-Forces command area (KdoBer FOF) was also housed here. On October 26, 2011, the closure of the Schwanewede site as part of the Bundeswehr reform until 2013 was announced. In the course of the implementation plans for the stationing concept that were adapted in 2013 , the closure of the site was set for the third quarter of 2015.

The Bremen merchant Hermann Hegeler acquired the formerly 40,000 square meter area and had a manor house built in 1868. In 1905 the property became the property of Carl Albrecht - the grandfather of the later Minister-President of Lower Saxony, Ernst Albrecht  . He gave up the estate management, but contributed a lot to the design of the park. The Albrecht family sold the property in 1971, and Lufthansa took over the manor house with around 23,000 square meters of land. The Lufthansa students from the Bremen flight school were accommodated here during their pilot training. The Herrenhaus Leuchtenburg has been run as a hotel for a few years. Albrechts Park, with its old trees, large rhododendrons and picturesque ponds, is one of the special highlights of Leuchtenburg.

In Löhnhorst, the former Hohehorst manor , built in 1928/29 by the industrialist G. Carl Lahusen as the country and summer residence of his family, served as the Lebensborn home “Friesland” and later as a hospital during the Nazi era.
