Barrows in the Neegenbargsheide
The barrows in the Neegenbargsheide are in the OT Schukamp, north of Schwanewede in the Osterholzer Geest in Lower Saxony .
There are more than 20 burial mounds in three groups on a hilltop. The heather, which has been under landscape protection since the 1930s, was not spared from destruction , in particular due to the construction of gravel pits and the removal of sand.
One of the mounds was examined in 1956. The core of the hill, piled up from plagues of turf, contained the paired and apparently simultaneous remains of two burials in tree coffins . A circular moat surrounded the burials. Although no additions were found, it is believed that they belong to the older Bronze Age .
It is generally believed that such mounds were formed during the Bronze Age. The discovery of an early Iron Age urn showed traces of the usual subsequent burials around the mound. By the end of the 19th century is to be on the "Neegenbargsheide" a passage grave have been found with the tell-oriented name "Gray Stallion".
The pedological investigations allowed interesting conclusions : Before the mound was built, a strong fire must have burned at the site. Apparently the burial site was already surrounded by a circular moat at the time of the fire. This finding suggests a cult act that may have taken place in connection with the funeral.
