Lower Saxony State Association for Prehistory

The Lower Saxony State Association for Prehistory is an association for research into the early state history in Lower Saxony . It was founded on September 16, 1932 as the “Working Group for the Prehistory of Northwest Germany” in the Provincial Museum in Hanover as a “Working Group for the Prehistory of Northwest Germany ”. Today the regional association with around 450 members (as of 2004) is the largest archaeological association in Lower Saxony. He belongs to the umbrella organization of the Lower Saxony Archaeological Working Group .

The prehistorian Karl Hermann Jacob-Friesen initiated the establishment of the “Working Group for the Prehistory of Northwest Germany” in 1932 and became its first chairman. From 1933, the working group published the scientific journal Die Kunde - Mitteilungsblatt for the prehistory of Northwest Germany . One of the aims of the working group was to bring together people interested in prehistory, to educate the population about the importance of prehistoric soil monuments and their protection. The offers of the working group to its members included specialist lectures, excavation visits and courses on prehistory.

After the Second World War , the association was re-established in 1950 as the “Lower Saxony State Association for Prehistory”. When it was re-established, it was determined that the association should work in close cooperation with the Prehistory Department of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover . It was also determined that the first and second chairman of the association should come from the scientific staff of the state museum. a. happened in the person of the director of the Prehistory Department Wolfgang Dietrich Asmus . The publication of the annual magazine Die Kunde. Journal for Lower Saxony Archeology with research reports was continued (Volume 62 appeared in 2013 - 2011).

In 1981 the Friends of Prehistory and Early History (FUF) emerged after Heinz Schirnig, head of the Prehistory Department of the State Museum, held a seminar on a pre-Roman urn cemetery in Riepe at the Volkshochschule Hannover in 1978. The activities of the Freundeskreis consisted of summer excursions, winter museum visits and participation in excavations in Lower Saxony. In 2004 the Freundeskreis had around 170 members. For organizational reasons, the Circle of Friends was affiliated with 100 members to the Lower Saxony State Association for Prehistory at the beginning of 2014.

In 1999 the working group ... Stone Age was founded, a regional forum for Stone Age issues that is attended by lay people, amateur archaeologists and specialists alike. The working group meets four times a year. Once a year the working group organizes a symposium, which includes scientific lectures, notifications of finds and a Stone Age exchange. The exchange offers the opportunity to present finds and have them assessed.

On March 4th, 2009 the working group ... rock paintings was constituted .

Until 2018, the first chairman of the association was Stephan Veil , who holds a doctorate in prehistory and was formerly head of the archaeological department of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover. At the annual general meeting on March 8, 2018, Florian Klimscha, who holds a doctorate in prehistoric and curator in the Department of Archeology at the Landesmuseum Hannover, was elected as his successor.
