Heinz Schirnig

Heinz Schirnig (born February 16, 1937 in Schreiberhau , Silesia , German Empire ) is a German prehistorian and museum director.

Life

Schirnig studied prehistory and early history at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate there in 1970 . In 1970 he was one of the founding members of the Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony . He was head of the department for prehistory and early history of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover and from 1987 to 2000 managing director of the Lower Saxony Sparkassenstiftung based in Hanover. He is known for his excavations and research on topics of prehistory and early history as well as the provincial Roman archeology of Lower Saxony and his publications on the topics in books, guides and magazines.

Cultural Foundation hbs

In 1998, together with his wife Brigitte, Schirnig set up the hbs cultural foundation with endowment capital of DM 50,000 , the capital of which had grown to EUR 300,000 by 2012. The foundation annually awards a prize to curators and exhibition organizers who have realized unusual ideas in exhibitions. The prize is endowed with 5000 euros. In 2013, the foundation announced a critics' award for the first time, which will now alternate with the award for curators.
