The Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony is a professional association founded in 1970 that promotes and coordinates archaeological research and the preservation of monuments in Lower Saxony . It has its seat in Hanover and is registered there as an association .
history
The forerunner was the working group of prehistory and early history researchers in Lower Saxony , which was founded on June 15, 1960 as part of the Lower Saxony Heimatbund . The task of the working group was initially to assess applications for the allocation of research funds. Appropriate state ministries decided on the allocation of funds from the Lower Saxony number lottery . In the course of time, other tasks were added, such as the coordination of the few research projects in the 1960s. Soon the desire arose for a permanent organization instead of a loose union as a working group in order to represent the interests of archeology more effectively.
The Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony was founded on March 4, 1970 in Reinhausen by 25 founding members:
- Claus Ahrens
- Wolfgang Dietrich Asmus
- Herbert Aust
- Karl-Ernst Behre
- Martin Claus
- Rudolf Dehnke
- Jürgen Deichmüller
- Albert Genrich
- Hans Goetting

- Hans-Günter Peters
- Klaus Raddatz
- Heinz Schirnig
- Peter Schmid
- Elisabeth Schlicht
- Heino Gerd Steffens

At the same time the working group of prehistory and early history researchers in Lower Saxony was dissolved . In the further course of the founding year 1970 the commission already had 36 members, in 1979 there were 104 and in 1998 there were 152 members.
The prehistorian Herbert Jankuhn was chosen as chairman as the main initiator of the foundation . Werner Haarnagel became second chairman . Both were replaced in 1976 by Heinz-Günter Peters and Ralf Busch . From 1982 to 1987, Heinz Schirnig and Dieter Zoller were chairmen. This was followed by Günter Wegner and Wilhelm Gebers in the chair. From 1996 Karl-Heinz Willroth and Rolf Bärenfänger were chairmen . Rolf Bärenfänger and Michael Geschwinde have been chairmen since 2000 .
