Peter Schmid (archaeologist)

Peter Schmid (born November 29, 1926 in Hamburg ) is a German prehistorian . His research focus is the settlement archaeological investigation in the north-west German coastal area.

Live and act

From 1947 to 1948 Schmid worked as an intern at what was then the Lower Saxony state office for marshland research in Wilhelmshaven . There he conducted archaeological surveys, archive studies and geological mapping. Between 1948 and 1954 he studied Prehistory and Early History , Geography and Geology at the University of Kiel and was established in 1954 with a thesis on "The pre-Roman Iron Age in the North Sea marshes" doctorate . He then worked from 1954 to 1963 as a research assistant at the Lower Saxony State Institute for Marsh Research in Wilhelmshaven. At that time he was responsible for the local excavation management of the priority program " Dorfwurt Feddersen Wierde " of the German Research Foundation . In 1963 he became curator at the Lower Saxony State Institute and held the post of senior curator there from 1969 to 1973 before he was subsequently appointed head of the institute. He held this position until 1991. In 1976 he was appointed Scientific Director, in 1977 he became an honorary professor at the University of Göttingen and from 1978 he held the position of Chief Scientific Director at the Lower Saxony State Institute for Marsh Research. He retired in 1991.

Schmid has been married to Gisela Kuhland since 1957. He has two children with her, including the archaeologist Arne Schmid-Hecklau .

In 1963 he became a corresponding and from 1978 a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and in 1973 a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen . In 1970 he was one of the founding members of the Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony . In 1980 membership of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz was added. There he also took on the role of deputy chairman of the board of directors.
