Hajo Hayen (born March 6, 1923 in Idafehn , † November 8, 1991 in Varel ) was a German prehistoric and moor archaeologist . Hayen initially worked as a district archaeologist in the 1970s and then worked at the Oldenburg State Museum for Nature and Man .

Life

Hajo Hayen was born in Idafehn, a district of Ostrhauderfehn . He completed his school education in Oldenburg. From 1940 to 1945 he did his military service . After the war , Hayen studied pedagogy , biology and geography at the Pedagogical Academy in Oldenburg, where he taught at various elementary and secondary schools after completing his studies. In his spare time, Hayen explored the surrounding moors with the support of the Oldenburg Museum and published his research results, for which he was awarded the sponsorship prize of the then Oldenburg Foundation in 1963 . Due to his intensive research activities, Hayen had to take leave of absence from teaching more and more often, and finally a post for peatland research was set up at the museum , which Hajo Hayen took over. In 1970 he was one of the founding members of the Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony . In the winter semester 1981/82 he was given a teaching position at the University of Osnabrück , and from 1982 to 1986 he was in charge of a large-scale research assignment supported by the Volkswagenwerk Foundation . Until his retirement, Hayen worked at the Oldenburg Museum, where he resigned as chief curator in 1988 .

Services

Hayen developed together with Reinhard Schneider improved excavation techniques in Mooren, especially when detecting bog bodies and timber objects. In his work, Hayen always sought interdisciplinary cooperation with other scientific departments and other scientific institutions throughout Europe in order to be able to evaluate finds as comprehensively as possible. The numerous wood finds he has handed over to the University of Cologne made it possible to create a complete dendrochronological calendar for the region. He paid special attention to the research of prehistoric plank paths , historical transport and the archaeological bog finds.

In 1985 he received the Brothers Grimm Medal .
