Idafehn is a district of the municipality Ostrhauderfehn in the district of Leer in East Frisia .

history

The place, which historically does not belong to East Friesland, but to Oldenburg , emerged as a feudal settlement after the construction of the so-called West Canal . The tender for the canal construction of the "Canal in the western Commendemoore along the East Frisian border" was issued on April 2, 1864. After completion in early 1866, the colonies could be sold to various interested parties. The western canal extended over a length of around eight kilometers from the Leda near Ubbehausen to the boundary of Ramsloh .

On February 6, 1893, the resulting colony was officially named "Idafehn" by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg Nikolaus Friedrich Peter . The name is reminiscent of the mother of Grand Duke Ida von Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym , who died at the age of 24, and was the second wife of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August von Oldenburg.

In 1953/1954 the "West Canal" was filled in. Today district road 73 runs on the former canal bed.

On March 1, 1974 Idafehn was separated from Strücklingen , district of Cloppenburg and incorporated into the municipality of Ostrhauderfehn.

Attractions

The rebuilt Idafehn mill is one of three windmills that were located in the area of today's municipality of Ostrhauderfehn. Originally built in October 1891, the windmill was destroyed by fire during the Quimburga storm on November 13, 1972. The hurricane gusts had accelerated the mill blades so much that there was enormous frictional heat inside the mill. The brakes failed - and the mill, a widely visible landmark of Idafehn, caught fire. In 1993 the Möhlenkring Idafehn was founded, which set itself the goal of rebuilding the mill and which in the following years, together with the municipality of Ostrhauderfehn, promoted the reconstruction according to the historical model. The rebuilding of the mill was completed in 2000. The two-story gallery Dutchman is around 20 meters high, the ridge height of the mill is 18 meters and the gallery height is 5.50 meters. The mill is the symbol of Idafehn.
