history
Holterfehn is a fen colony that was created in 1828 on the Holterfehn Canal, which was created as a branch canal from the main Fen Canal in an easterly direction. The place was named after the neighboring place Holte and was officially recorded for the first time in 1852. In 1848, 275 people lived in 56 residential buildings. Holterfehn formed a political and educational unit with the neighboring Holtermoor early on.
The municipality of Holtermoor had only 131 inhabitants until 1821. With the establishment of Holterfehn, the number of inhabitants increased significantly from 1828. In 1848 both places had a total of 588 inhabitants, in 1871 already 996. With 1,125 inhabitants in 1885, the municipality of Holtermoor had the highest population.
In 1970 the municipality of Holtermoor decided to merge voluntarily with the municipality of Ostrhauderfehn and gave up its independence. In the negotiated area change agreement, the localities of Holtermoor and Holterfehn were defined as new districts of the new unified municipality of Ostrhauderfehn.
