history

When West- and Ostrhauderfehn were founded in 1769, a canal was dug northwest of the Westrhauderfehn Canal with muscle power in the 19th century , which flows north into the Leda. The canal also leads from the first Südwieke in Ostrhauderfehn into the Leda. The canal as a waterway was created for the removal of cut peat . Since seafaring was the most important thing in the two communities in the past, people drove with the Peat Mutten and Tjalken across the canal, Leda and Ems into the North Sea. From there the seafarers drove to Bremen , Hamburg , Altona and many other cities and countries in the world. There they exchanged peat for goods that were just needed on the Fehn .

Todays use

The peat cut has become economically insignificant there. Today the water is used for recreation, fishing and recreational shipping with small vehicles .
