Günter Wegner

Günter Wegner (born March 31, 1937 in Kleinostheim , Aschaffenburg district ; † November 23, 2016 in Würzburg ) was a German prehistoric archaeologist .

Life

Wegner studied Catholic theology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg from 1957 to 1963 and worked in pastoral care until 1970 , including at times as a research assistant . In 1969 he received his doctorate for the first time . In 1970 it was laicized through papal dispensation . From 1970 to 1975 he studied prehistory, also at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, with a second doctorate under Günther Haseloff . From 1978 to 1987 Wegner was head curator of the prehistoric department at the State Museum for Natural History and Prehistory in Oldenburg and had a teaching position at the University of Oldenburg . From 1987 to 2002 he headed the archaeological department of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover , had a teaching position at the University of Göttingen and had been an honorary professor there since 1997 . In 2002 he retired. From 1987 to 1996 he was chairman of the Archaeological Commission for Lower Saxony and from 1987 to 2000 chairman of the Lower Saxony State Association for Prehistory and editor of the magazine Die Kunde .

He was married to Christine Wegner and had a son. He is buried in the cemetery in Berlin-Frohnau .
