Stichting Taurus
Stichting Taurus is a Dutch foundation that uses large grazing animals in near-natural husbandry without additional feeding. Various robust horse and cattle breeds are used .
Background and Practice
According to the mega- herbivore hypothesis , the former large herbivores such as aurochs , bison , wild horses , elk and others had a significant influence on the dynamics between flora and fauna . However, these were either eradicated in their wild form or largely disappeared from the European wilderness. Accordingly, modern nature conservation is increasingly relying on large grazing animals, which descend from their extinct ancestors, in order to preserve the biodiversity of open areas.
Stichting Taurus uses Konik horses and Exmoor ponies on the one hand, and robust cattle such as Galloway cattle , Scottish highland cattle and the auroch-like cattle Sayaguesa , Pajuna , Maremmana primitivo and others on the other. These robust cattle and horses largely manage without additional feeding and live freely all year round in the Keent natural landscape .
Other Projects
Stichting Taurus is also involved in the TaurOs Project . Through crossbreeding and selective breeding of the robust, aurochs-like primitive cattle, this project aims at breeding that is much closer to the aurochs than other cattle breeds of today and is suitable for reintroduction in Europe's natural areas.
