The Blassportgruppe (BSG) - originally called Blassportgruppe Südwest - is a German (wind) music group. It appears as a marching band ( street band , brass band ) and can be stylistically classified in the genres of jazz , New Orleans jazz and pop .
history
The Blassportgruppe was founded in mid-2004 by fellow students Felix Fromm ( trombone ) and Axel Müller ( saxophone ). Both musicians are currently studying jazz & popular music at the Mannheim University of Music. In 2005, the group first appeared publicly as a Marching Act. The debut CD "Vitamin BSG" was recorded quickly in autumn 2005 and released in early 2006. As part of the 2006 World Cup, the band was hired by FIFA to appear in the supporting program in eleven German cities. In the same year, the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate sent the Blassport group to Schwerin as musical representative for the central celebrations for the Day of German Unity . In February 2009 the Blassportgruppe released the EP "Superblau", which was released as a pre-CD for a studio album planned for autumn. In January 2010 the band was awarded the "Freiburger Leiter 2010" culture prize at the Freiburg culture exchange. In the spring of 2010 the band signed a record deal with Jazzhausrecords from Freiburg. In the course of this cooperation, the album "Steil" was produced (released September 24, 2010). Numerous open air shows followed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In January 2011 the Blassportgruppe went on a club tour and was supported by the Kultursekretariat NRW (Fördergruppe Jazz) for a short tour through NRW. From 2012 the Blassportgruppe was on tour with the new stage program "Back in Blech", which was then pressed onto an album in 2013. From 2017 the Blassportgruppe will be on the road with a new program called "black on white".
Style and concept
The line-up is based on American parade bands (New Orleans Marching Bands). The tentet can do without harmony instruments and is mobile. At first the band played evergreens from jazz , pop , German hits and film music. Always held together by virtuoso, humorous arrangements with a high proportion of jazz, this resulted in an unusual concert program. For example, on the debut CD “Vitamin BSG” there is a brass music - punk version of Karel Gott's “ Biene Maja ” as well as a “When it rains” by Brad Mehldau arranged into a funeral march . Felix Fromm's arrangements and the choice of pieces became much more complex and provocative over time. The band released a 7-minute adaptation of the German anthem in 11/8 time on their CD “Superblau”, the title track of which is an adaptation of Freddie Hubbard's “Superblue”. From 2009 onwards, in addition to the now large repertoire of extraordinary arrangements of existing works, he also composed his own compositions. The 2010 release "Steil" for the first time contained mostly own songs and others. a. of the then singer Tobi Christl. Since 2011, as well as in the stage program "Back in Blech", the Blassport group has oriented itself much more rock than before.
