Franz Niquet

Franz Niquet (born June 7, 1910 in Braunsberg / Neuruppin district , † June 6, 1986 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German prehistorian and monument curator .

Life

Franz Niquet came from a Huguenot family. He attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm High School in Neuruppin . His interest in archeology arose from participating in excavations by one of his teachers. In 1930 he passed his Abitur and studied prehistory at the University of Halle , where he passed the state examination in 1934. 1935 Niquet was in Halle with a thesis on middle Neolithic in central Germany doctorate .

In 1934 and 1935 he was a research assistant at the State Institute for Folklore in Halle (Saale) , then until 1938 scientific assistant. In 1938 he published his work on the Rössen cemetery , which gave the Rössen culture its name . In 1938 and 1939 Niquet worked as an assistant at the Museum for Prehistory and Early History in Berlin . In 1939 he went to the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum für Geschichte und Volkstum , where he was responsible for the preservation of monuments. In 1939 he was called up for military service. In 1950 he returned from being a Soviet prisoner of war for over five years . He resumed his work at the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum, where he worked in the department for prehistory. From 1952 Niquet was a research assistant and from 1964 a curator . From 1965 until his retirement in 1975 he worked for the state conservation of monuments in the Braunschweig district government and carried the title of senior archaeologist. He had a teaching position at the Technical University of Braunschweig for over seven years .

Niquet examined one of the earliest settlement sites of the Neolithic near Eitzum and undertook extensive excavations for a post-Christian settlement near Gielde . His discovery of a fibula with a runic inscription on a burial ground from the Merovingian period near Beuchte caused a stir . In 1972, in Braunschweig, Niquet carried out excavations on the Ackerhof in the southeastern area of ​​the Braunschweig Castle before the Horten AG department store was built .

He documented his excavation activities in numerous publications. For cost reasons he also used prisoners for excavations .
