The Carroll Glacier is a 34 km long glacier located in the US state of Alaska and the Canadian province of British Columbia .
geography
The glacier's nutrient area is located at an altitude of 1,100 m in the Alsek Ranges in the Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park of British Columbia. From there it flows initially in a southerly direction, later in a southeasterly direction. He crosses the border to Alaska. The lower two-thirds of the glacier are in Glacier Bay National Park in the Panhandle of Alaska. The mean 3.8 km wide glacier ends at a height of 180 m about 5-6 km from the sea above Queen Inlet and Wachusett Inlet , two side bays of Glacier Bay .
Glacier development
The Carroll Glacier grew by 1,100 m between June 1987 and August 1988. Then the glacier came to a standstill. However, the thickness of the ice layer is steadily decreasing. Rock debris that was lifted during the growth phase now covers a large part of the lower end and edge of the glacier.
Naming
The Carroll Glacier was named after James Carroll (1840-1912), captain of the SS Queen .
