The Alsek Ranges are the south-easternmost mountain range of the Elias chain . They extend from the panhandle of Alaska (USA) in the south via British Columbia to the Canadian territory of the Yukon in the north.
location
The Alsek River delimits the mountains in the northwest to the actual Elias chain. Melbern and Grand Pacific glaciers separate the Alsek Ranges from the Fairweather Range to the southwest . In the south the mountains extend to the Icy Strait . The river valleys of the lower Chilkat River , Kelsall River and upper Tatshenshini River run along the dividing line to the Boundary Ranges to the east . The lakes Dezadeash Lake and Kathleen Lake are also on this dividing line. The Haines Highway runs over long distances along that boundary. At Haines Junction , the Dezadeash River forms the northern limit of the mountain range.
The part of the mountain range located in British Columbia is entirely within the Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park . Most of the area in Alaska between Lynn Canal and Glacier Bay is part of Glacier Bay National Park . The northern end of the Yukon is partly in Kluane National Park .
The area north of Glacier Bay with the Takhinsha Mountains is heavily glaciated . The Chilkat Range extends to the extreme southeast . The highest mountain in the Alsek Ranges is Buckwell Peak with a height of 2721 m .
