The Melbern Glacier is a 13 km long glacier in Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada.
geography
The glacier's nutrient zone is north of the Grand Pacific Pass at an altitude of 650 m . It borders the Grand Pacific Glacier to the south, but it flows south. The Melbern Glacier, which is 2.2 km wide on average, flows in a north-westerly direction. It separates the Fairweather Range in the west from the Alsek Ranges in the east. After 13 km the glacier ends at the southern head end of a 19.5 km long glacial edge lake , which is referred to as Melbern Lake (or as Melbern Lakes ). From its northern end the Melt Creek flows to the Tatshenshini River , into which it flows immediately before its confluence with the Alsek River .
Glacier development
In the past, the length of the glacier was 37 km. The glacier tongue was enough at that time almost to the Alsek River. As a result of the glacier retreat, a glacier edge lake formed, which today covers the former lower reaches of the glacier. The Melbern Glacier continues to retreat. In 2005 the length of the glacier was less than 16 km.
Naming
The glacier was named after William Melbern Dennis, a surveyor.
