The Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung in Hanover is a foundation for the promotion of the fine arts , music , museums and monument preservation in Lower Saxony . With a foundation capital of around 27.8 million euros and around 3.5 million euros in funding annually, the institution, which cooperates with the VGH Foundation and operates joint management , is one of the largest cultural foundations in northern Germany . She owns a large collection of contemporary art and has initiated a number of her own prizes and events such as the Lower Saxony Music Days .

history

The foundation was established in 1985 by the Lower Saxony savings banks and the Norddeutsche Landesbank . Right from the start, it was sponsored by the Lower Saxony Savings Banks Association . The Low German language is also one of the funding objectives .

Since 2000, when VGH Versicherungen founded the VGH Foundation on the occasion of the 250th anniversary , the two foundations have been managed jointly.

activities

In 2008, the foundation built up its own art collection with more than 1200 works by contemporary artists. Some of the pieces are presented in traveling exhibitions or as loans to museums in Lower Saxony.

Since 1991, the Sprengel Prize for Fine Art (endowed with € 12,500), originally donated by the art patron Bernhard Sprengel in 1979, has been awarded annually. The Kurt Schwitters Prize was added in 1995 , so that the two awards now alternate every two years.

The Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung organizes the Low German Reading Competition every two years and awards the Lüttjepütt Prize and the Quickborn Prize for services to the Low German language as well as the Hans Henning Holm Prize for achievements in the field of Low German radio play.

Every two years from 1986 to 2018, the Foundation awarded the Monument Preservation Prize, which honored the charitable commitment of private monument owners.

The foundation has been running the hbs culture fund since 2014 as the successor to the hbs culture foundation established in 1998 . Every two years, on the recommendation of a jury, it awards a museum prize worth 15,000 euros.
