In the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the population of the place was mostly around 600 people. Due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has steadily declined since then.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the village lived directly (as day laborers) or indirectly (as traders or craftsmen) from agriculture. They worked the lands of the landlord, the Marqués de Villaverde , who also had the title of Count Conde de Morata , and their own small fields.

history

After the expulsion of the Moors under Philip III. Due to the Duke of Lerma in the years 1609 to 1615, many rural communities began to depopulate and the local landlord was forced to reorganize his possessions. The old castle and the old town were too far from his fields and so in 1676 he decided to build more than 20 farm workers' houses around an octagonal square with three entrances on the plain close to his possessions. The associated church was built a few years later. The place was originally called Villaredonda and only got its name after the old settlement had completely fallen into disrepair. The landlord moved his own residence to the neighboring village of Morata de Jalón .

Attractions

Plaza de España
  • The main attraction of the place is the Plaza de España , classified as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in 2001 , which has an unusual octagonal floor plan. On each of the eight sides there are usually two or two houses with a separate entrance and two storeys. For the tower of the church, which was subsequently built from bricks, a section of around four meters was left open. There is a well in the square to supply the residents with water.
  • A wide-span stone arch bridge from the late 17th century leads over the Río Jalón and connects the two places Chodes and Morata de Jalón.
  • The early baroque church tower of the abandoned village of Villanueva de Jalón shows some Mudéjar elements and is also recognized as a cultural asset.
