Oldrich Majda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oldrich Majda (born April 5, 1930 in Kováčovce , Czechoslovakia , † 2006 in Bratislava , Slovakia ) was a Slovak artist , painter , illustrator and sculptor .

Life

Majda was born with a heart defect; his doctors calculated a life expectancy of seven to ten years. He started painting when he was ten. From 1949 to 1953 he studied architecture at the Technical University in Bratislava and scenography at the University of Musical Arts in Bratislava . Until 1968 he worked in various editorial offices of various newspapers and magazines as a technical and graphic editor. Since the normalization between 1970 and 1990 he could no longer pursue his work and also no longer exhibit his works; he started out as a painter and stage builder in the decoration workshop of the Slovak National Theater . In 1970 he leased a piece of land and built a refuge there, where he created most of his sculptures. Over the next 35 years, he dug catacombs over 250 m in length with rooms and sculptures on the walls under his retreat. In 1990 he worked as an illustrator, but mainly devoted himself to his art. After 1990 he had over 40 independent exhibitions abroad and in Slovakia. His artistic path was shaped by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Above all, he asserted himself as a landscape painter, but also with still lifes, nude drawings, portraits and with the artpoti technique ; his sculptures are less well known.

The number of his works is estimated at over 4000 copies. Many of his works have been donated to charity such as those in Osaka, Japan under the guidance of Ms. Matabe. The proceeds went to the Lehnice Children's Hospital in Slovakia. In 2008 he received the Suchohrad honorary citizen award.
