The University of Performing Arts in Bratislava ( Vysoká škola múzických umení v Bratislave (VŠMU)) is a public university in the Slovak city of Bratislava .

The academy, which initially consisted of a music and drama faculty , was split in 1953. The first rector was Ján Strelec (1893–1975). The rector has been Mária Heinzová since 2015.

There are three faculties:

  • music and dance
  • play
  • Movie and TV

Well-known teachers at the university were Alexander Moyzes , Ján Cikker , Frico Kafenda , Eugen Suchoň and Václav Talich .

In some cases, training courses are also offered in English and German so that foreign-language students can also take part in the training as part of the Erasmus program . There is also a library.

Accommodation

The three faculties are divided into two listed buildings in Bratislava: The building on Zochova ulica has been the headquarters since 1986, it was designed by the architect Ignác Alpár in 1895 and was originally a French secondary school. In the past, teaching was carried out in different places such as the Štúrova, Kapitulská and Panenská.

In the city center it is located in the building of the medieval Universitas Istropolitana .

Cooperations

The Academy has long been working closely with the Janáček Academy for Music and Performing Arts Brno , the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague , as well as with the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna , the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden and of the National Music Academy of Ukraine Peter Tchaikovsky .

When it opened in 1989, collaborations were significantly strengthened, such as with art academies in France, Norway and Finland.
