The Žilina University in Žilina , in Slovak Žilinská univerzita v Žiline ( UNIZA for short ), is a public university in the Slovak city ​​of Žilina with around 8,800 students and 1,500 employees (2017).

The Žilina University in Žilina was split off from the Czech Technical University in Prague on October 1, 1953 as the University of Railways . In 1959 it was renamed the School of Transport and on September 6, 1960, it was moved from Prague to Žilina. The university was later called the University for Transport and Information Science . It was given its current name in 1996 when the government of the time created several new universities in Slovakia.
