National Music Academy of Ukraine Peter Tchaikovsky ( Ukrainian Національна музична академія України ім. П. І. Чайковського until 1995 Kiev Conservatory , Київська консерваторія ) is the best known musical training center of Ukraine .

history

It was founded in 1913. It emerged from a music school that had been opened by the Russian Music Society in 1868. The first rector of the Conservatory was the pianist, composer and music teacher Wladimir Puchalski (1913), followed by the composer Reinhold Glière (1914–1920). In 1995 the institution was renamed the National Academy of Music of Ukraine (NMAU) according to an ordinance of the then President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma .

The NMAU is the largest music academy in Ukraine and plays an important role in the country's musical life. About 2000 Ukrainian students and more than 200 foreign students study at the academy.

The NMAU is located on the central square of Kiev , the Majdan Nesaleschnosti (German "Independence Square"). The building was built in the 1890s (architects Eduard Bradtman and Georg Schleifer ). 1955-1958 the building was rebuilt and expanded to include a concert hall (architects Lev Katok and J. Krasny).
