Valentina Lisitsa , German transcription Walentyna Lyssyzja , scientific transliteration Valentyna Lysycja (born December 11, 1973 in Kiev ) is a Ukrainian pianist . 2020 She currently lives in Rome and gives concerts worldwide. Her spouse Alexei Kuznetsoff , with whom she has a son, is also a pianist. She also performs as a piano duo with him.

biography

Lisitsa started playing the piano at the age of three and gave her first solo piano recital a year later. Her family had no professional connection to music and, contrary to her own musical disposition, she wanted to become a professional chess player as a child.

She attended the Lyssenko music school for gifted children and later the Kiev Conservatory , where she studied together with her future spouse Alexei Kuznetsoff.

Career

In 1991 she and Kuznetsoff won first prize at the Dranoff International Two Piano Competition , one of the world's most important competitions for piano duos. In the same year they both moved to the United States to build their careers as concert pianists. They gave their debut performance there in 1995 at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York.

In 2012 she made her solo debut at London's Royal Albert Hall in front of an audience of almost 8,000. On her homepage she gave her audience the opportunity to vote on the program and choose from a repertoire by Frédéric Chopin , Franz Liszt , Sergei Rachmaninow and Alexandr Scriabin . She has been under contract with Decca Records since 2012 , where the recording of this concert was released by Valentina Lisitsa Live At The Royal Albert Hall .

Breakthrough as a YouTube star

Her career in the United States stagnated; she rarely had the opportunity to perform. On April 25, 2007, she uploaded her first video to YouTube . She built on the surprising success of this video, so that she had uploaded over 350 videos to YouTube in February 2019; their YouTube channel was being subscribed to by around 500,000 users at the time. The videos include pure musical interpretations as well as interviews and outtakes . Concert organizers and the media describe Lisitsa as “the first YouTube star in classical music”.

She says about her success:

“When a great music star is born, a huge PR machine starts up. (…) All of a sudden you see that one face on music magazines and everywhere, and then people start buying things with that name on. And for me it was exactly the opposite: it came from below - people brought me up because they wanted to - and they like that. "

Sound carriers and videos

Until 2012 Lisitsa has published on changing labels:

  • several CD recordings for Audiofon Records , Naxos and Deutsche Grammophon
  • DVD with Frédéric Chopin's 24 Studies (2004)
  • DVD Schubert-Liszt Schwanengesang (2005) and
  • Black and Pink (2007)

Since 2012 she has been under contract with Decca Records , among others with the following releases:

Invitation from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra

A performance by Lisitsa with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was temporarily withdrawn from the program due to political statements. The orchestra president Jeff Melanson justified the rejection by saying that the orchestra was not a stage for "provocative comments" and that Lisitsa's ongoing allegations with deeply offensive language spread on social media had already overshadowed her last appearances in Toronto. Lisitsa gained notoriety in Ukraine for her public commitment to the pro-Russian separatists and her critical stance towards the pro-western Ukrainian government. Lisitsa left the US (where she previously lived) in 2015 for France and then for Italy.

Concert performance on the Crimean peninsula

In September 2017, Lisitsa gave a concert on the Russian- annexed Crimean peninsula at the 5th Classical Music Festival in Sevastopol after entering the Crimea illegally. The Ukraine considers the Crimea as a violation of international law occupied by Russia territory and pursues an entry without special permission to the Crimea - and foreigners - a criminal offense. Such a special permit is only granted by the Ukrainian authorities under strict conditions and generally not for tourist purposes or artistic performances. Various artists who illegally entered Crimea have been prosecuted by the Ukrainian authorities. Lisitsa also visited Sevastopol as a piano player at the sixth (in September 2018) and seventh (2019) music festivals.
