Georges Baklanoff
Georges Baklanoff ( Russian Георгий Андреевич Бакланов Georgi Andreyevich Baklanov ; originally: Alfons-Georg Bakkis ; born December 23, 1880 Jul. / 4. January 1881 . Greg in Riga , † 6. December 1938 in Basel ) was a Russian opera singer ( baritone ) .
Life
Georges Baklanoff's family came from Latvia , his original name was Alfons-Georg Bakkis. Baklanoff became an orphan at an early age. From 1892 he was educated in Kiev . He could not complete his law studies in Kiev and St. Petersburg because his guardian embezzled his property, committed suicide and left him penniless. At Ippolit Prjanischnikow he received two years training as a singer, for which he did not have to pay. From 1902 Baklanoff was able to complete his vocal training in Milan with Vittorio Vanza . In 1903 he made his debut at the Kiev Opera with the title role in Rubinstein's Demon . From 1905 to 1907 he was engaged at the Imperial Opera in Moscow , where he appeared in the world premieres of Rachmaninoff 's Miserly Knight and Francesca da Rimini , after which he moved to the Court Opera in St. Petersburg and appeared in the premiere of Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimsky , among others -Korsakows The legend of the invisible city of Kitesh and of the virgin Fevronija . In 1910 he was heard at the Covent Garden Opera in London . There he sang Rigoletto and Scarpia in Tosca . In the same year he also appeared as Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City ; in addition, from 1910 he gave numerous guest appearances in Europe and America. These included an appearance in the world premiere of I Mori di Valenza from the estate of Ponchielli . From 1912 to 1916 he was a member of the Vienna Court Opera ensemble; From 1917 to 1928 he was engaged at the Chicago Opera, but from 1926 he began to appear again increasingly in Europe. In 1932 he moved to Switzerland.
Numerous recordings by Baklanoff have come down to us; the first was written by G&T in St. Petersburg in 1907 and was also published by Zonophone . This was followed by further acoustic recordings at HMV , Columbia , Artistophon and Vox as well as electrical recordings at Parlophon .
At times he was married to the soprano Lidija Lipkowskaja (1884-1958).
