background
During the winter break, there were only comparatively few changes in the line-up of drivers. The teams Tyrrell , Brabham , Hesketh , Ferrari , Lotus , Shadow and the Lola team from Graham Hill each competed with the driver pairings with which they had completed the 1974 season . In addition, most of the teams fielded vehicles from the previous year on the now traditional early date of the Argentine Grand Prix in January.
With McLaren had decided to discontinue the operation of the third, sponsored by Yardley company car and focus-Texaco vehicles Marlboro to the two. After Denis Hulme's career ended , Jochen Mass , who had driven the third car in the last two races of the previous season, joined the team as the second regular driver alongside world champion Emerson Fittipaldi .
From now on, the Brabham works team competed under the name of its new main sponsor Martini .
After the end of the collaboration between Frank Williams and the Italian manufacturer Iso Rivolta , the team's racing cars were entered in the registration lists for the first time with the designation "Williams". However, these were initially not new developments, but modified models from the previous year. The strategy, with a regular driver and changing Paydrivers to compete, has been retained to the financially difficult situation to improve the team.
The March team had announced that they would no longer compete in Formula 1 for financial reasons. However, when the Beta company announced that it wanted to sponsor a vehicle for Vittorio Brambilla , this decision was reversed. Also due to a lack of funds, there were several changes at BRM. After the departure of team manager Tim Parnell and the renaming of the team to "Stanley BRM", only one company car was reported, which was driven by Mike Wilds . Even John Surtees reduced the commitment of his team to only a vehicle with John Watson was occupied. This was available because the private team "John Goldie Racing", for which he had started last year, had withdrawn from Formula 1.
The US teams Parnelli and Penske became an integral part of the Formula 1 World Cup, after having only participated in the two final races on the North American continent last year. The driver line-up was retained in both cases.
Wilson Fittipaldi , the brother of the reigning world champion, returned to the GP scene behind the wheel of his own car. It was the first Brazilian Formula 1 design. The car was registered under the name of the main sponsor Copersucar .
After Firestone's official withdrawal , Goodyear became the sole tire supplier to Formula 1.
training
One of the few new developments ready to start was the Shadow DN5 , the only example of which was piloted by Jean-Pierre Jarier this weekend and with which he completely surprisingly took pole position in front of the two works Brabham of Carlos Pace and Carlos Reutemann . Ferrari driver Niki Lauda followed ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt and Clay Regazzoni in the second Ferrari.
With the Lotus 72, which is now five years old in terms of its basic design, the two Lotus works drivers qualified for positions 11 and 18 respectively.
run
In the case of his first pole position, of all things, Jean-Pierre Jarier was unable to take part in the race because he retired during one of the warm-up laps before the start due to a gearbox failure. Reutemann took advantage of the vacated starting position directly in front of him and took the lead from third in front of his team-mate Pace. Jochen Mass and Jody Scheckter collided in the first corner, whereupon both had to head for their respective boxes for repairs and thus fell back.
Third placed Lauda was overtaken by Hunt on lap eight, who then caught up with the two leading Brabham. Wilson Fittipaldi lost control of his vehicle and hit the guardrails, causing the car to catch fire. Fittipaldi escaped unharmed, but the car was badly damaged during its first race. Meanwhile, Pace had taken the lead. Shortly thereafter, however, he spun in the area of Fittipaldi's accident site and fell back to seventh place.
In the 26th lap, Hunt took the lead from Reutemann. During the following laps, Emerson Fittipaldi overtook Lauda, Reutemann and finally the leading Hunt. The resulting order of the first three did not change until the finish. Pace, who had meanwhile worked his way up to fourth place, retired shortly before the end of the race due to an engine failure, so that fourth place ultimately went to Regazzoni. Patrick Depailler in fifth and Niki Lauda in sixth also ended the season opener in the points.
