background
As in the previous year , the Argentine Grand Prix was held in January. Due to political disagreements, the race was initially canceled, but then announced again at short notice. The field of participants was correspondingly small. Most of the teams competed with two cars.
With regard to the driver line-up, there have been some changes compared to the 1972 season . Probably the most remarkable news was the signing of Ronnie Peterson as a regular driver at Lotus alongside the reigning world champion Emerson Fittipaldi . Peterson's place at March was taken by Jean-Pierre Jarier . It was decided to contest the entire season with only one trailer, after the second factory driver last year, Niki Lauda to BRM was changed, where he teammate of of Ferrari coming Clay Regazzoni and the already established regular driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise was .
Mike Beuttler also started in a privately deployed March. The teams Tyrrell and McLaren retained the regular line-ups from the previous year.
After two guest appearances in the previous year , Arturo Merzario was signed up as a regular driver alongside Jacky Ickx to replace Regazzoni at Ferrari . There was no third works driver this year. Brabham boss Bernie Ecclestone also initially rejuvenated his team from three to two regular drivers, with Graham Hill losing out.
Howden Ganley became a regular driver at Frank Williams Racing Cars , where a new attempt was made to develop from a customer to a works team with their own cars. For this purpose, with the support of the Italian company Iso Rivolta and the cigarette brand Marlboro, two Formula 1 vehicles were developed and manufactured. Frank Williams occupied the second car with Nanni Galli for a few races . His place at Tecno was taken by Chris Amon , who had to look for a new cockpit after Matra's withdrawal . However, the team did not compete in the first races of the year.
training
Clay Regazzoni secured pole position with his fastest lap time during the fourth training session and then shared the front row with Emerson Fittipaldi. Jacky Ickx, Jackie Stewart , Ronnie Peterson and François Cevert qualified behind them .
run
Cevert, Fittipaldi and Regazzoni reached the first corner at the same time after the start. The Frenchman, who started from sixth place, was able to prevail and take the lead, but had to hand it over to Regazzoni in the second corner.
This order remained constant until lap 29. Then Cevert managed to take the lead again as Regazzoni struggled with worn tires. Meanwhile, Stewart had worked his way up and was able to take second place from Regazzoni on lap 32. Fittipaldi and Peterson were also able to overtake Regazzoni and keep the pace of the leading group.
Until round 68, the order of the first four did not change. Then, however, Peterson had to give up because of an engine problem. Shortly afterwards, Stewart had tire problems and had to give Fittipaldi second place on lap 76. This then caught up with the leading Cevert and was finally able to overtake him on lap 86 after an exciting duel.
