Reports
background
The organizers were motivated, among other things, by the success of Ronnie Peterson to hold a Grand Prix of Sweden, which is part of the World Cup, for the first time.
The field of participants was smaller than in the previous races, as some small private teams in particular did not manage to repair the damage caused to their vehicles in Monaco in good time and travel to Sweden.
Ferrari again did without Arturo Merzario and only registered one car for the Grand Prix. Instead, the local Reine Wisell wanted to supplement the field in a privately deployed March . It was the vehicle that David Purley had driven in Monaco .
Nanni Galli had withdrawn from Formula 1 after the Monaco GP and was replaced in Frank Williams' second vehicle for the rest of the season by changing drivers who each had to pay for their work. Tom Belsø received the cockpit for the Swedish GP and was thus the first Dane in Formula 1. Since he could not raise the money to start the race, he had to forego the race despite a successful qualification.
training
To the delight of the audience, local hero Ronnie Peterson qualified for pole position. He shared the first row with François Cevert . The two rivals for the world title, Emerson Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart , formed the second row of the grid.
run
Reine Wisell damaged his car in one of the warm-up laps and was therefore unable to compete.
After members of the GPDA complained that some photographers were in dangerous positions on the track, the race started a little late.
Emerson Fittipaldi had the best start, putting him in second place behind his teammate Peterson. Cevert, Stewart, Reutemann and Hulme followed, with the placement changing between the latter two in the fourth round.
This order remained unchanged until Stewart overtook Cevert on lap 34 and caught up with the two Lotus in the lead. Cevert, who had problems with the tires, fell behind Hulme on lap 62. The New Zealander caught up with the leading group and overtook Fittipaldi on lap 71, who suddenly slowed down due to a transmission problem and retired a short time later. With four laps to go, Hulme also passed Stewart into second place.
On the penultimate lap, Hulme's decision to start on harder tires than most of the competition turned out to be the right one. He overtook Peterson, whose softer tires were no longer competitive and thus wrested the tangible home win from him.
