The 1973 Monaco Grand Prix took place on June 3rd and was the sixth race of the 1973 Automobile World Championship .

Reports

background

After extensive renovation work, the Monaco circuit presented itself with a new tunnel, expanded pit systems and a new section in the swimming pool area. Because of this, the race did not take place until the beginning of June, after a date had usually been set in May in previous years.

The starting field was expanded to include two March customer vehicles in which David Purley and James Hunt made their Formula 1 debuts this weekend. In addition, Scuderia Ferrari sent two cars into the race for the first time since the South African Grand Prix . Thus, for the first time this season, 26 vehicles were registered for a Grand Prix.

training

Jackie Stewart qualified for pole position and Ronnie Peterson for second place in the front row. Behind them were Denis Hulme , François Cevert , Emerson Fittipaldi and Niki Lauda . For the Austrian, this was the best starting position of his career to date.

George Follmer damaged his Shadow so badly in the course of a collision with Arturo Merzario in Saturday's training session that he had to forego the race.

run

Cevert took the lead from the second row, but only kept it one lap as he spun on the second lap and had to let the entire field pass by. Peterson then managed to create and expand a lead at the front as second-placed Regazzoni seemed to hold up the rest of the field. None of the actually faster drivers behind him got past him on the narrow and winding course until he made a mistake on the sixth lap and had to use the run-off zone in the harbor chicane. This put Stewart in second place and quickly caught up with Peterson, who was now plagued by fuel injection problems and eventually dropped to sixth place.

Stewart was now ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi and Niki Lauda, who stayed there until a gearbox failure on lap 25. After Jacky Ickx had to give up on lap 45 due to technical problems, Wilson Fittipaldi took third place for a few laps, directly behind his brother. However, on lap 71 he retired due to a leak in the fuel system. The last place on the podium ultimately went to Peterson. In the meantime, Cevert had worked his way up from the end of the field to fourth place.

Newcomer James Hunt impressed with a good performance. If he had not had to give up a few laps before the end due to an engine failure, he would have been rewarded with a championship point in his first race.
