The 2014 Monaco Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2014 ) took place on May 25th at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the sixth race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

background

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with three points from Nico Rosberg and 51 points from Fernando Alonso . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 113 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 131 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

In contrast to the other racetracks on the Formula 1 calendar for the 2014 season, there was only one DRS zone in Monaco, which was on the start-and-finish straight. It started 18 meters after the last bend, the measuring point was 80 meters behind the piscine .

Marcus Ericsson used the helmet design of his late compatriot Ronnie Peterson this weekend .

Jules Bianchi , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Kevin Magnussen and Adrian Sutil (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Alonso (twice), Kimi Räikkönen , Hamilton, Jenson Button , Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Christian Calmes (MON), Paul Gutjahr (CHE) and Derek Warwick (GBR).

training

The first two training sessions traditionally took place in Monaco on Thursday. In the first free practice, Hamilton was the fastest ahead of Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo . Raikkonen had several braking problems and once drove into the emergency exit of the Sainte Devote . However, his vehicle remained undamaged. Two drivers retired in the Mirabeau . Max Chilton stalled his engine, Adrian Sutil drove into the wall. In the second free practice session it was initially wet. Alonso set the fastest lap on the drying track with the super soft tires ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. Most of the laps were done in the last ten minutes because the track was too wet before. Raikkonen had a transmission problem and only drove four laps. There were several minor incidents, but no major accident.

The third free practice took place on Saturday as usual. Hamilton was ahead again. Ricciardo finished second, Rosberg third.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Daniil Kwjat lost control of his Toro Rosso when braking into the harbor chicane and hit the guard rails . In the process, he destroyed the front wing of his car, but continued training after a brief repair stop. Kwjat stopped Maldonado in the further course and was warned by the race management because of the hindrance. Shortly before the end, the rear wheels of Ericsson's Caterham blocked when the Mirabeau Haute braked , Ericsson drove into the lane and collided with Felipe Massa . For this reason there were no more time improvements at the end. Two penalty points were imposed on Ericsson. In addition, his starting place was withdrawn. He was allowed to start the race out of the pits. Jean-Éric Vergne was the fastest, but in contrast to the drivers of the top teams, he drove his fastest lap on the softer tire compound. The Caterham , Marussia and Sauber pilots were eliminated. Maldonado made it into the second section for the first time of the season. Massa couldn't get to the pits with his damaged car, so he couldn't take part in the second qualifying segment. Vettel reported a problem with the ERS to his team by radio, and until the end of qualifying he did not have the full power of the electric motor available.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. The Williams and Lotus pilots as well as Button and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated. Hamilton was fastest ahead of Rosberg and Vettel.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Shortly before the end of qualifying, when Rosberg was leading the ranking, he braked himself in the Mirabeau Haute and drove into the emergency exit. Therefore, yellow flags were shown in the sector, so that none of the drivers behind him on the track could try any more improvement. Rosberg took pole position ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo, who, despite a mistake on his fastest lap, finished third in the porter . The race stewards initiated an investigation into Rosberg after qualifying and the media made comparisons with Michael Schumacher's deliberate parking maneuver in the Rascasse during qualifying for the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix . The commissioners refrained from punishing Rosberg.

Bianchi received a starting place penalty of five positions for changing gear.

run

At the start of the formation lap, Maldonado stopped. The car was brought into the pits with a defect in the fuel pump, which could not be repaired at short notice, so Maldonado did not start the race.

In the starting grid at the end of the introductory lap, Gutierrez, contrary to the rules, moved up one row to the empty starting position of Maldonado, and Chilton and Bianchi each moved up one row. For this, all three drivers were later given a five-second penalty.

While Rosberg stayed in front of Hamilton at the start, there were changes behind it. Vettel was third in front of Raikkonen, Ricciardo and Alonso. The safety car came onto the track during the first lap after Pérez had an accident in the Mirabeau Haute after a collision with Button . Pérez was eliminated. While Rosberg and Hamilton took the lead after the restart, Vettel lost some positions in the lap after the restart and pitted. After another lap, he gave up because the turbo engine ran out of charge pressure.

While Sutil, who was in the pits in the safety car phase, performed a few overtaking maneuvers in the back field, Kwjat gave up with a technical defect. In the next laps, the Mercedes drivers increased their lead at the front, while Ricciardo caught up on Raikkonen. During this phase, Hamilton made several inquiries about his tires and the time of his stop. On lap 24, Sutil lost control of his vehicle at the exit of the tunnel and crashed in the Nouvelle Chicane . Several pieces of debris were lying on the track, so there was another safety car phase, which, however, was initiated with a short delay. With the exception of Massa, all drivers used the safety car phase for a pit stop. The positions at the top remained unchanged. Vergne was let go too early when he stopped and almost collided with Magnussen. Later he received a drive-through penalty. So that no lapped driver was between the front pilots, all lapped drivers were allowed to lap back. Chilton collided with Raikkonen. Both pits for repairs and resumed the race. While Chilton stayed in last place, Raikkonen fell far behind. Ricciardo took third place.

At the restart, Rosberg stayed ahead of Hamilton. Magnussen overtook Vergne in the Rascasse right after the first green flag. Shortly afterwards Vergne passed Magnussen again, while Magnussen was overtaken by Hülkenberg in front of the tunnel. After Vergne's drive-through penalty, Hulkenberg was in fifth place. In the meantime, in the back of the field, Raikkonen and Bianchi passed Kobayashi, so that both were close to the top ten. After his pit stop, Massa was between Räikkönen and Bianchi. Shortly after Bianchi was involved in a duel with Vergne, Vergne was eliminated with an engine failure.

While Rosberg and Hamilton were again far away from the rest of the field, Bottas stopped a few drivers in eighth place. In the 56th lap he finally suffered an engine failure and stopped in the Loews . The car could be recovered without a safety car phase. After 59 laps Gutiérrez retired after a driving error in the Rascasse . Again there was no safety car phase. From the 66th lap, Hamilton let Rosberg pull away because he complained about something in his eye. Ricciardo caught up with Hamilton in the next few laps. There was no overtaking maneuver.

There were still changes to the top ten. First, Button passed his team-mate Magnussen, who was slowing down. One lap later, Raikkonen collided with Magnussen in the Loews. Both lost a few positions, but continued to drive. Raikkonen also completed a repair freeze. Raikkonen fell back from the top 10 and drove the fastest race lap on fresh tires in the final phase. Bianchi was now in eighth place, but had not yet served his five-second time penalty as his only pit stop took place during a safety car phase. With the exception of Grosjean, he managed to keep all the other drivers sufficiently far behind him.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. Mercedes achieved a one-two result for the fifth time in a row. The last time a team had five one-two victories in a row was in 2002 , when Ferrari won the last five races with one one-two. Alonso was fourth in front of Hülkenberg, Button, Massa, Grosjean, Bianchi and Magnussen. Bianchi scored both his first points and the first points for Marussia in ninth place.

In the drivers' championship, the lead changed back to Rosberg. Hamilton fell to second place. Alonso stayed in third place by a greater margin. The first three positions among the designers remained unchanged, with Mercedes further expanding their lead.
