The Lotus E22 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of the Lotus F1 Team for the Formula 1 2014 season . It was the team's fifth race car since owned by Genii Capital and the 22nd race car designed and built at the Enstone factory in the UK ; therefore it was named E22 . The engine supplier for the vehicle was Renault . The Lotus E22 was first shown to the public on January 24, 2014 without prior notice via a tweet from the racing team.

On January 6, 2014, Lotus announced that it would not be able to complete the car in time for the first official test drives of the season from January 28, 2014 in Jerez and instead only take part in the second test drives in Bahrain from February 19, 2014. The car did its first laps on the race track on February 7th and 8th in Jerez, when the Lotus team covered 100 km as part of "Film Days".

Technology and development

The nose of the Lotus E22 called “double prongs”

The E22 was the successor model to the E21 , although the vehicle differed significantly from the previous model, both visually and technically due to rule changes for the 2014 Formula 1 season .

The car was powered by the newly developed Renault Energy F1 2014 , a 1.6-liter V6 engine with a turbocharger .

Due to the rule changes for the 2014 season, the nose of the vehicle was significantly lower than that of the vehicle from the previous year. The front wing of the car was suspended from two narrow struts that were of different lengths. Experts estimated the difference to be around five centimeters, since according to the regulations, the nose of the vehicle could only have a single area five centimeters behind the foremost point of the vehicle, which was at least 9000 mm² in size. Charlie Whiting , the FIA's technical delegate , declared this solution legal, describing it as a "very clever interpretation of the rules".

Painting and sponsorship

Like its predecessor, the E22 was painted black and gold. Thanks to the sponsors Total , PDVSA and Genii Capital , the car was also given red accents. Further sponsor stickers came from the products Rexona and Clear from the Unilever group as well as from the energy drink burn and from YotaPhone .

driver

Lotus competed in 2014 with the driver duo Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado , who drove for the Williams team in the preseason . At Lotus he replaced Kimi Raikkonen , who switched to Ferrari .
