The 2014 Italian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Gran Premio d'Italia 2014 ) took place on September 7th at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the 13th race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Belgian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 29 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 64 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 157 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 251 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones, the first zone was behind the Curva di Lesmos , the measuring point was in front of the curve entrance of the second Curva di Lesmos . The measuring point for the second zone was in front of the Curva Parabolica , the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight.

In the run-up to the race, for safety reasons and at the request of the drivers and the FIA, the gravel bed in the Curva Parabolica was reduced by more than a third and parts of the run-off zone were paved. This caused criticism from fans and some drivers, who feared, among other things, discussions about leaving the track, which now instead of a failure or damage to the vehicle might give the driver an advantage. Karun Chandhok tweeted about this: Another curve that loses its challenge.

At Caterham there was another driver change. Kamui Kobayashi returned to the cockpit, replacing André Lotterer , who had driven the vehicle in Belgium. Originally Roberto Merhi was supposed to race for the first time at this Grand Prix, but his engagement failed due to a lack of a super license . He was only allowed to participate in the first free practice. Lotterer was offered the cockpit again, but declined because he wanted to be used in the first free practice.

Jules Bianchi , Kevin Magnussen , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Sebastian Vettel (three times), Fernando Alonso (twice) and Hamilton (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Paul Gutjahr (SUI), Radovan Novak (CZE), Alessandro Tibiletti (ITA) and Derek Warwick (GBR) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton was ahead of Jenson Button and Rosberg. Merhi took part in this training session for the first time in a Formula 1 weekend and took over the Caterham from Kobayashi. In addition came Charles Pic at Lotus for Romain Grosjean and the Garde Giedo van at Sauber for Sutil used. Daniel Juncadella took over the Force India from Sergio Pérez for the first half an hour. In the second free practice, Rosberg took the lead from Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen . In the third free practice session, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Alonso and Bottas. Rosberg did not set time because of a transmission problem.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was the fastest. The Caterham, Marussia and Lotus pilots were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton again drove the fastest lap. The Sauber and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Nico Hülkenberg and Räikkönen were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton stayed in the lead and achieved pole position ahead of Rosberg and Bottas.

Daniil Kwjat was moved ten positions back due to the use of a sixth engine component. Kwjat uses a sixth internal combustion engine ( Internal Combustion Engine , ICE).

Ericsson was subsequently excluded from the grid due to an offense in the third free practice session and allowed to start out of the pits. When the yellow flags were waved twice, he had not slowed down sufficiently and thus violated the regulations. He was also given three penalty points.

run

Hamilton had problems calibrating the clutch at the start and dropped from first to fourth. Bottas, who was directly behind him, also had problems in the start phase and fell back to tenth position. Rosberg took the lead ahead of Magnussen and Felipe Massa . While Rosberg pulled away, Massa and Hamilton lay behind Magnussen and put pressure on him. On the fifth lap, Massa passed Magnussen in the Curva Grande and Hamilton passed him one corner later. After the fourth lap, Max Chilton retired after an accident.

Rosberg braked himself on the seventh lap in the Rettifilo and lost about 1.7 seconds by driving through the emergency exit. Hamilton, however, passed Massa three laps later in the Rettifilo and shortly afterwards drove the fastest lap of the race to date. In the midfield, Bottas stood out in the next few laps with a few overtaking maneuvers.

In the 24th lap, Rosberg took the lead in the pits. Hamilton took the lead for one lap, but fell back behind Rosberg after his stop. Some drivers who stopped earlier benefited from the pit stops. Hamilton quickly caught up on Rosberg after the stop. In the 29th lap, Rosberg braked again in the Rettifilo . Hamilton took advantage of the situation and drove past him. He built his lead up to around four seconds in the first few laps after the change in leadership. This distance remained roughly the same until the end of the race. Shortly after the change in leadership, Alonso dropped out with a technical defect. There was also a duel between Bottas and Magnussen in the Rettifilo . Magnussen Bottas pushed into the emergency exit and was then given a five-second time penalty by the race management. Two laps after this incident, Bottas went past Magnussen to fifth position behind Hamilton, Rosberg, Massa and Vettel.

Bottas passed Vettel a little later. Ricciardo first overtook Button, then Pérez and Magnussen. As a result, he was in sixth place behind Vettel. He also caught up with his teammate and finally passed Vettel in the Curva Grande .

In the last laps there was a collision between Grosjean and Gutiérrez in the back of the field, for which Gutiérrez was subsequently given a time penalty of 20 seconds. Kwjat once missed the braking point in the duel with Raikkonen in front of the Rettifilo , but did not collide and drove on. Magnussen, whose time penalty was added to the race result, failed to distance Pérez, Button and Raikkonen enough to stay ahead of them.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Massa, who stood on the podium for Williams for the first time. Bottas was fourth ahead of Ricciardo and Vettel. Pérez, Button, Raikkonen and Magnussen completed the top 10.

The first three positions in the drivers' world championship remained unchanged. Hamilton shortened the gap to Rosberg. In terms of design engineers, Mercedes expanded its lead ahead of Red Bull. Williams took third position.
